Ishan Kishan Century Powers East Zone Dominance
The Ishan Kishan Century headlined a dominant opening day for East Zone in the Duleep Trophy final, as the side closed on 385 for 4 against South Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Kishan finished unbeaten on 111, with useful contributions from Shikhar Mohan (85) and Kumar Kushagra (63*) ensuring South Zone, despite fielding several returning Test players, struggled to find a foothold on a flat pitch throughout the day.
Sooryavanshi’s explosive start
After winning the toss and choosing to bat, East Zone got off to a flying start built around Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s rapid 44 off just 37 balls. The young batter broke through in the fifth over with a pair of boundaries off MD Nidheesh, before targeting Mohammed Siraj the following over with a boundary through point and a six over long-off, capping it off with another boundary over mid-off. Siraj struggled to find control throughout his spell, finishing the day having conceded close to seven runs an over across his 14 overs.

Easwaran joins the attack
Abhimanyu Easwaran matched his partner’s aggressive intent, taking Siraj for consecutive fours in the ninth over before hitting Tripurana Vijay for six in the next. The pair continued to push the scoring rate, with Easwaran reaching his own half-century shortly after the drinks break.
The entertaining opening stand, worth 100 runs, eventually ended in the 15th over when Chama Milind had Sooryavanshi caught after his brisk innings.
Wickets fall but East Zone regroups
South Zone found a second breakthrough when a mix-up between the batters led to Easwaran being run out in the 25th over, following a brief 33-run stand.
East Zone lost another wicket early in the post-lunch session when Sudip Kumar Gharami departed just four overs after the interval, briefly leaving the match evenly poised at that stage of the innings.
Kishan and Mohan rebuild the innings
Kishan and Shikhar Mohan steadied East Zone’s innings with a productive 94-run partnership. Mohan accelerated in the 35th over with a six and two fours off Tripurana Vijay before bringing up his half-century two overs later, and later struck two more sixes off Shreyas Gopal in the 48th over. He eventually fell for 85, just 15 runs short of a century, after chopping the ball onto his stumps in the 53rd over.
Kishan and Kushagra take control in the final session
Where South Zone had managed brief fightbacks earlier in the day, East Zone gave them no such opening in the final session. Kishan and Kumar Kushagra put together an unbeaten 144-run stand as South Zone’s bowling attack visibly tired, with both batters looking comfortable against occasional turn on offer. The Ishan Kishan Century came up with a boundary off Gopal in the 77th over, before stumps were drawn two overs later with East Zone firmly in command.
Where the match stands after day one?
With East Zone closing day one at 385 for 4, the Ishan Kishan Century has put his side in a commanding position heading into day two of the Duleep Trophy final. South Zone, despite the presence of experienced Test players in their line-up, will need a significant response with the ball to peg back an innings that has so far offered them very little control.
